About the Camp
Grounds
Southeastern Baptist Youth Camp –commonly called Westport Camp because of the location- is in a beautiful country setting of 62 acres. The tranquil sound of flowing water in Sand Creek can be heard as it outlines the edges of camp. The camp property has three lakes, which allows opportunity for swimming, fishing and boating activities. The grounds include a baseball diamond and several open grass areas for game activities. Right in the heart of camp is the beautifully restored historical chapel and the year round facility called Grace Hall, along with the Retreat Center that will accommodate approximately 76 overnight guests. There are eighteen seasonal cabins nestled in the trees to give campers a wilderness atmosphere, and for those who are adventurous there are hiking trails in the woods. Throughout the camp are nine open shelter houses that are good for picnics, small groups, or just to rest in the shade.
Operation
The camp is owned in cooperation of American Baptist Churches within various associations of southeastern Indiana. The member associations provide volunteers to serve on the camp board, which oversees the operation of the camp. Churches of the member associations help provide summer camping programs for children and youth that come from a variety of backgrounds. Southeastern Baptist Youth Camp is non-discriminatory; therefore, acceptance and participation in programs are without regard to race, color, gender, age, handicap, or national origin.
Volunteers
Each camping session is led by a Dean – who is a volunteer from a supporting church that has been selected by the managers. The Dean oversees the session program and has the responsibility of recruiting mature Christian volunteers to work with the campers. All of the volunteer help along with donations from churches and individuals help keep camper fees at a below-cost price.
History
Here at Westport the camping history goes way back to the late 1930’s when the first retreat was held. The first purchase of property was made in 1946 of 33 acres, and cabins began being built in 1947. Over the years Southeastern Baptist Youth Camp has continued to grow in order to meet the needs of ministry. Even though the grounds, landmarks, and people change we can be thankful that the message of God’s Word remains the same. In all reality, God is the ultimate owner of this camp.
Managers
Don and Sarah Snyder took position of camp management January 2004 and are succeeding nearly 23 years of service by Steve and Judy Malone. The Malone’s have retired and reside in Vernon, Indiana. The Snyder’s moved from Jennings County along with their three children D. J., Dustin, and Kelsey. D. J. is serving in the U. S. Marine Corps, while Dustin and Kelsey are involved with the ministries at the camp. Don and Sarah look forward to the opportunities of ministry available through the camp as it becomes a year round facility. It is their desire for Southeastern Baptist Youth Camp to be all that God wants it to be.
We are excited about the work God is doing through the camping ministry.
